cluster server

The cluster node which acts as a ﬁle system server for all the cluster nodes in an HP-UX

cluster.

command interpreter

A program which reads lines of text from standard input (typed at the keyboard or read from a

ﬁle), and interprets them as requests to execute other programs. An HP-UX command inter

preter is called a shell.

cpu

The part of a computer that interprets and executes instructions.

environment

The set of deﬁned shell variables that deﬁne the conditions under which your commands run.

These conditions can include your terminal characteristics, home directory, and default search

path.

ﬁle access permissions

Every ﬁle in the ﬁle hierarchy has a set of access permissions. These permissions are used in

determining whether a process can perform a requested operation on the ﬁle (such as opening

a ﬁle for writing).

home directory

The directory name given by the value of the shell variable HOME. This is the directory

where the user starts after logging in.

kernel

The part of the HP-UX operating system that is responsible for managing the computer’s

resources.

Local Area Network

The systems and clusters which share data, hardware, and software resources via Networking

Services software.

operating system

This is the entire HP-UX system, including the kernel and all HP-UX commands. See also

kernel.

shell

An HP-UX command interpreter. See also command interpreter.
