Using Your 3.5-Inch Floppy Disk Drive

Operating the Floppy Drive

Inserting and Removing a Diskette

Follow these steps to insert and remove a diskette from the ﬂoppy disk

drive.

1. Insert the diskette into the drive, as shown in Figure 3-3.

2. Push the diskette into the ﬂoppy drive until it clicks into place.

3. Remove the diskette by pressing the eject button (see Figure 3-1) and

taking it out of the drive.

Using Device Files

Device ﬁles are special ﬁles that tell your system which pathway through

the system hardware to use when communicating with a speciﬁc device.

Device ﬁles also describe the type of device. You will need to know the

special device ﬁle associated with your ﬂoppy disk drive so that you can

write data to it or read data from it.

NOTE The device ﬁle names depend on the naming conventions of your

particular system.
